Interested in Fostering?

It is the responsibility of Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue (“MGPR”) to offer for adoption healthy, socialized guinea pigs to the extent possible. To this end, foster families are expected to provide regular socialization and to use supplies in accordance with the guidelines established by the rescue, including brands of food and bedding, and the provision of fruits, vegetables, and hay.

Fostering Application

Fostering is a year-long commitment. You must be able to foster for a year and bring the guinea pig you foster to the adoption meet we host one time per month in central MD (located between Baltimore, Washington, and Frederick County, MD). Fostering is not means to try out a guinea pig before adopting.

MGPR accepts guinea pigs from a variety of shelters, in all states of health and socialization – ranging from friendly and healthy to unsocial and critically ill. MGPR wants your foster care experience to be a comfortable and positive one. We will make the best match possible for you, your family members, your lifestyle, and your environment. If you are interested in fostering a special needs animal, we will provide you with the required support.

MGPR will provide all vet care for the foster guinea pig(s) through the approved veterinarians.

I agree to the following conditions (You must agree to and check all boxes to be considered for fostering):

I will keep my foster guinea pigs in a separate cage from my own animals. I understand that there is a risk of my pets becoming ill and/or injured from exposure to foster guinea pigs.
I will house the guinea pig(s) in the appropriate rescue approved cage (MGPR will provide a cage if needed).
I will provide only bedding; food; and non-alfalfa hay that has been approved by MGPR, without reimbursement
I will provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and green non-alfalfa hay to the foster guinea pig(s), without reimbursement.:
I agree to provide daily handling of my foster guinea pig(s) in a safe and appropriate manner
I will monitor my foster guinea pig(s) regularly, weigh them weekly, conduct regular health checks, and immediately notify one of the board members of any concerns about a foster animal’s health or behavior
If my foster guinea pig(s) requires veterinary attention, I will do my best to obtain permission from one of the board members before taking the animal to the vet. I will take the animal to an approved veterinarian immediately or arrange for another foster parent to do so in emergency situations.
If I take my foster guinea pig(s) to the veterinarian, I will attempt to contact and discuss any suggested veterinary procedures, including but not limited to diagnostics such as bloodwork or radiographs, non-routine procedures, or euthanasia, with the board members before they are undertaken
The foster guinea pig(s) are the property of MGPR. I will adhere to any decisions by MGPR about the return or placement of the foster guinea pig(s).
I will provide the appropriate bowls, hides, and water bottles for the foster guinea pig(s)
I will make prior arrangements to return my foster guinea pig(s) to MGPR if I can no longer foster them
I will not take in guinea pigs on behalf of MGPR from individuals, animal shelters, or any other sources, without prior permission of MGPR
I understand that foster guinea pigs must be adopted through MGPR and they may not be released into the care of anyone prior to the completion of the full adoption process and contract
I understand that an authorized agent of MGPR may check on any foster guinea pigs in my care and remove them if deemed necessary
MGPR and its authorized agents are not responsible for any accidents, injuries, or illnesses arising from the fostering of MGPR guinea pigs
MGPR, its authorized agents, and the hosting facility or owner are not responsible for any accidents, injuries, or illnesses at or arising from adoption meets
I will not turn over a foster animal to anyone who claims it is his/her lost pet without consulting with a board member.
I will not transfer a foster animal to another foster home without first notifying a board member
I will follow all foster care policies and procedures
MGPR retains full ownership of any animal in foster care and will handle all decisions made in regards to adoption and care for the animal
