Nolan’s Story:
An Invitation to Support Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue

MGPR receives almost all of our guinea pigs from local shelters. Our local shelters are frequently overwhelmed with dogs and cats and they rarely have the funding and time to give adequate attention to the numerous small animals that enter their care. MGPR supports our local shelters by receiving, caring for, performing the neuter and spay, and adopting shelter guinea pigs to caring forever homes.

Sometimes, however, MGPR will respond to an urgent need to help a guinea pig in distress. Such was the case with Nolan.

We received an E-mail from a local Maryland resident who had found a guinea pig that was abandoned in a park while walking his dog. It was late fall and the dog noticed the guinea pig shivering under a bush. The man was able to capture the guinea pig and, realizing that it would probably not survive the night because of the cold, took it home. He searched for guinea pig rescues on the Internet and easily found MGPR. In his email he noted that the guinea pig was sick and asked if we could help him determine the best course of action.

The guinea pig had an obvious skin disease and exhibited hair loss, lesions and scabs covering large portions of his back. Our rescuers kept him overnight and took him to one of our local vets the next day. The diagnosis was common ring worm, but the disease was so severe that his prognosis was uncertain.

Fate was kind to this guinea pig, now named Nolan, and he responded remarkably well to the medications prescribed to treat the parasite that caused his ringworm. After his recovery, he entered our adoption program and found a loving forever home.

On the left is a picture of Nolan when he was found. The next picture is Nolan (shown on the right) with his new best friend, a beautiful girl with the same coloring.
